LUGGAGE
SAVE FUEL WHEN DRIVING
If you do drive, the following ways will help reduce your fuel use:
EATING OUT
- Avoid taking heavy items as much as possible, unless walking or cycling (then you’ll do it any way!).
- Take small quantities of toiletries, medication, makeup, etc. (Collect small bottles for this purpose.)
- Can some items serve 2 purposes? e.g. sandals doubling as slippers.
- Take fewer clothes but have some drip-dry ones (easy to wash!).
SAVE FUEL WHEN DRIVING
If you do drive, the following ways will help reduce your fuel use:
- Drive more slowly (45 - 50 mph is best).
- Change up gears earlier rather than later (and get more mpg).
- Aim for less braking: anticipate the need to slow down - do it early and avoid stopping completely.
- Remove your roof box when not needed - it may increase fuel use by 50%.
- Plan your journey (Gooogle maps can tell you the most fuel efficient journey).
- Pump up your tyres to the recommended pressure (RAC says it can improve mpg by up to 3%) BUT DON'T OVER-INFLATE THEM (DANGER: YOU CAN LOSE CONTROL OF THE CAR).
- Turn off air conditioning when possible: open your windows instead on slower city roads but air conditioning is better on faster roads (when open windows will cause drag).
EATING OUT
- Choose local food & drink (reduce food miles!). (It’s also less likely to cause tummy upsets, as the local people are used to cooking it.)
- Don’t eat or drink too much (better for your health too!).
- Ask for drinks with no straw (reduce plastic!), and without ice (avoid carbon emissions from the electricity!).
- If you want to carry a drink, take it in a light bottle (not glass).
